Biography

Nychos (born 1982) is an illustrator, urban artist and graffiti artist from Austria. He is known for his signature sectional, cross-sectional, x-ray and translucent style, often portraying animals and characters from pop culture.

His works can be seen on walls around the world, while his works on canvas and drawings have been shown in international galleries. In 2015, the artist released the documentary film "The Deepest Depths of the Burrow," in which he recounts his experiences as a globetrotting artist. Nychos' pseudonym comes from a dinosaur named "Deinonychus." The name means "terrible claw" in Latin.

Nychos has developed a unique style that makes an impact both on the street and in the gallery. Growing up in a traditional hunting family, death and dissection were part of Nychos' daily business. His proximity to animal entrails has shaped him psychologically and visually - now he tackles the subject of dissection in his art, taking it to the extreme in a playful way.

In Nychos' world, Spongebob has a skeleton, people live inside rabbits, and there's always something evil underneath. Pumped up with the visual adrenaline of comics, heavy metal and graffiti, Nychos' work reflects the immense energy and technical focus necessary to produce work on the massive scale he has achieved on the road. Allowing style and subject matter to collide, Nychos cuts up animals and innocent childhood figures with unrelenting graphic precision.

His work confronts the viewer with vicious urgency, using the shock of cartoon violence as a vehicle to explore subtler themes of mortality and temporality. Nychos pays homage to these deathless cartoon heroes by peeling them open and giving them human substance. His artwork reflects the psychology of an art scene where creations are sometimes swept away as quickly as they were created.

Nychos also uses subtle imagery like plastic in the belly of an orca and weaves political commentary seamlessly into his works. Using delicious landscapes of color and wild, smoking lines to create his figures - whether with brush or spray can - Nychos works with unmatched dynamism. His mastery of his tools indicates a work ethic that only promises more stunning results from this artist.

Nychos' paintings and drawings have been exhibited in galleries around the world, including five solo shows (Turino, Detroit, New York, San Francisco, Singapore) in the last year and a half alone. These works serve as a unique complement to his massive public works that add character to cities around the world. Nychos currently lives and works in Los Angeles and Vienna.
