Biography

The Instagram sensation Lucy Sparrow is widely known for her colorful, to-scale replicas of everyday objects found in ordinary retail stores, which she meticulously reimagines in felt and wool. While she is best known for her freestanding sculptures, she also creates wall works composed of felt objects presented in grid-like arrangements.

In dialogue with Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg, her Pop art–like soft sculptures are sold individually, yet are first presented within carefully constructed, immersive environments. Sparrow achieved overnight success in 2014 with The Cornershop, an installation in East London consisting of nearly 400 felt works that simulated a traditional convenience store. Another blockbuster followed in 2017 at The Standard, High Line hotel in New York City, where 8 ’Til Late recreated a classic corner bodega and sold out its 9,000 individual pieces in just over a week.

Working with a team to hand-stuff, sew, and stitch each piece, Sparrow explores themes of mass consumerism, notions of convenience, and perceptions of craft in her work.
