Martin Kippenberger (February 25, 1953 in Dortmund; March 7, 1997 in Vienna) was a German painter, installation artist, performance artist, sculptor and photographer.
Provocative, uncomfortable and self-centered: Martin Kippenberger, one of the most influential artists of the late 20th century, left many with the impression of an enfant terrible. But his artistic work was more than just egocentrism - it also conveyed profound messages for humanity and a moral perspective.
Kippenberger's diverse work and personality could hardly be classified into the usual categories of art history. His art went beyond personal themes and was permeated with humanistic messages and moral appeals.
Kippenberger had a great connection to Graz: In various art projects he worked with Günter Brus, Wolfgang Bauer and Jörg Schlick, among others .
