Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the most influential women of the Middle Ages. She was Duchess of Aquitaine, Queen of France by marriage, then Queen of England, and mother of Richard the Lionheart.
She was a courageous and determined person who did not allow herself to be defeated by the expectations of women of her time. For example, she took part in the Second Crusade alongside her husband, King Louis VII.
In this interpretation, she is shown in a humble attitude because the crusade was unsuccessful. Her chapped lips are a reminder of the hardships of the three-year crusade.
