Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the most influential women of the Middle Ages. She was Duchess of Aquitaine, Queen of France through marriage, then Queen of England, and the mother of Richard the Lionheart.
She was a courageous and determined figure who did not let the expectations of her time for women defeat her. For example, she personally participated in the Second Crusade alongside her husband, King Louis VII.
In this interpretation, she is depicted in a humble posture as the crusade was not successful. Her chapped lips symbolize the hardships of the three-year-long crusade.
