Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the most influential women of the Middle Ages. As Duchess of Aquitaine and, through marriage, first Queen of France and later Queen of England, she shaped European history like few other women. She was the mother of Richard the Lionheart and stood with courage and determination for a confident image of womanhood that went far beyond the expectations of her time.

She is known, among other things, for her participation in the Second Crusade, which she undertook at the side of her then-husband, King Louis VII. In this interpretation, Eleanor is depicted in a humble posture – a reference to the failure of the crusade. Her chapped lips symbolize the hardships and deprivations of the three-year campaign that left their mark on her.
