Flemish floral still lifes of the Baroque era served multiple purposes: they signified bourgeois status and refinement, they were objects of beauty celebrating nature – yet at the same time they functioned as memento mori. The flowers depicted were dead, doomed to decay, and the insects crawling among them lived only briefly. And yet, they continue to “live.” Beauty and death, in the mindset of the 17th century, were apparently inseparable.
The Infinity Mirror series unites both – in a black void these beautiful forms of the past emerge, overlap, and transform, reflecting the centuries of meanings that accumulate and dissolve with each new perspective. Everything changes with every gaze – not least the beholder themselves. That is one of the conditions of being.
