Flemish floral still lifes of the Baroque era fulfilled several functions: they stood as symbols of bourgeois status and refinement, they were objects of beauty that celebrated nature – and at the same time, they served as memento mori. The flowers depicted were already dead, destined to decay, and the insects crawling among them lived only briefly. And yet, they “live” on. Beauty and death, in the 17th-century mindset, were apparently inseparable.
The Infinity Mirror series unites both – in a black void, these beautiful forms of the past appear, overlap, and transform, reflecting centuries of meanings that accumulate and dissolve with each new perspective. Everything changes with each gaze – not least the beholder themselves. That is one of the conditions of being.
