The Mary Poppins books by British author P. L. Travers began in 1934 and span eight volumes through 1988. They follow the magical adventures of Jane and Michael Banks and their extraordinary nanny, Mary Poppins.

In this interpretation, the umbrella symbolizes Mary Poppins’ authority. Opening it often marks the moment she takes charge and assumes control. For Wolfgang, however, the large, overexposed umbrella becomes something else entirely: a kind of portal — a threshold between worlds from which she appears or disappears.
