he Mary Poppins books by British author P. L. Travers were first published in 1934 and comprise a total of eight volumes up to 1988. They tell of the magical adventures of the children Jane and Michael Banks with their extraordinary nanny, Mary Poppins.
In this interpretation, the umbrella stands for Mary Poppins’ authority. When she opens it, it is often the moment when she takes control and assumes leadership. For Wolfgang, however, the large, overexposed umbrella becomes something quite different: a kind of portal – a threshold between worlds through which she appears or disappears.
