Medea was the daughter of King Aeetes of Colchis, a country on the Black Sea known for its rich mythology.
She was an extremely gifted sorceress and priestess of the goddess Hecate, who was connected to magic and the underworld.
Medea fell in love with Jason, the leader of the Argonauts, when he came to Colchis to steal the Golden Fleece. With her help, Jason managed to steal the fleece and escape with Medea. The couple fled to Corinth, where they planned to build a new home. But Jason eventually left Medea and married another woman.
Out of jealousy and pain, Medea forged a cruel plan of revenge. She not only killed Jason's new bride, but also her own children to punish Jason.
This interpretation shows Medea expressing both grief through her oversized scarf on her head and carrying the heavy burden of her actions on her shoulders.
