The Baroque era holds a special place in the relationship between art and the divine. With figures frozen in a single flash of light, surrounded by darkness, artists such as Rubens sought to halt time and to imitate the gaze of a transcendent God. We live in a secular age, and must confront the void on our own. We search backwards for answers, in history, and towards one another, while time relentlessly shifts the ground beneath us. Our identities are mutable, and perspectives change with every moment, with every beholder. “Suspension of Disbelief through Transcription Error (after Rubens)” seeks to convey this confused, anxious state in which certainties dissolve, yet beauty and fleeting harmony remain.
