The Baroque era of painting marks a unique place in the relationship between art and the divine. With figures caught in singular flashes of light, surrounded by gloom, artists like Rubens attempted to freeze time and somehow replicate the gaze of a transcendent God. We live in a secular era, and we must confront the void alone. We look backward for answers - to history - and to each other as time inexorably moves the ground we stand on. Our identities are shifting things, and perspectives change with every moment, every viewer. 'Suspension of disbelief by means of transcription errors (after Rubens)' aims to depict this confused, anxious state where certainty is lost but beauty and ephemeral harmony remain.
