From the series: "The Backseat Gaze". The Backseat Gaze is an exploration of perspective, memory, and the restless anticipation of the journey. In a car, the driver is focused on the road, but the passenger in the back is free to dream. To "gaze from the backseat" is to exist in a state of pure observation, where the world is not a map but a series of textures, colors, and motion-blurred shapes rushing past the glass.
This series of five layered paper collages was inspired by the film Drift, which begins with a family’s urgent midnight escape from the city. As an artist deeply connected to board sports - I feel a deep connection with this pursuit of a lifestyle defined by flow and motion. These pieces capture the "in-between" moments where that lifestyle begins: in the car, on the way to the water, watching the world shift through a window.
By physically layering paper, I have built these memories to mimic the way a long road trip feels: a collection of fragmented moments that eventually form a life-changing arrival.
The Arrival. This final piece represents the daylight epiphany of seeing the coast for the first time. It is the visual "carve" toward the ocean - the moment the road finally meets the saltwater and the dream of the surf lifestyle becomes a reality.
